First of all, I love Amazon customer support, Initially i ordered for 906 receiver, it looks too heavy for me and my room. Immidiatly exchanged with 806 receiver. It is awsome, it may not be delivering the picture as 906, but with the 1080 upgrade i can feel the difference. As like some other complained abt blue screen when switching the components, i dont feel that.

I bought this after lot of research and hooked up with Klipsch Quintet speakers (5.1). The Sound is great, im right into a IMAX theater.

I just set this up with my brand new speaker system and it only partly works. Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Silver) After setting up the unit and listening to my iPod for about an hour, I switch over to the tuner/receiver. Then I tried to change the listening mode by pressing the "Music" button on the remote, but landing upon the "Orchestra" setting the most HORRIBLE noise I have ever heard was emitted by the speakers. Pressing the "Music" button again led to an even louder more horrible noise and then the Amp shut off. Upon turning it on again, it was in the "Mono" sound setting, so I pressed the "Music" button and when the 'pure music' setting started but I was curious and surfed the options and again on "orchestra" the Horrible noise started and pressing "Music" again made a louder noise and the Amp shut off.

The issue is that, the "Music" button is a one-way menu and to surf through to a specific setting it requires circling through the entire menu. Plus, everytime the power is turned-off the receiver turns-on in the 'Mono' setting so if you, say want to listen to the radio in stereo, you have to press the "Music" button, but if you miss the stereo setting and want to return to it, the system has to be turned-off, or you run the risk of 1. losing your hearing and/or 2. blowing you VERY EXPENSIVE speakers.

I am not happy with this in anyway and do fear that the noise that was produced by the amp DID damage my speakers.

While I was having the system professionally installed to go with my 7.1 in wall surround sound system the fan blew-out..It was in a well venalated area, so till this day Myself and the installer dont know what could have caused it, but with the warranty they sent me another one hoping I wasn't going to have the same issue and so far it has worked great. This is my first receiver so maybe this review can't make any diference.. BUT.. I have to say sound is really great and it has a lot of features that you can enjoy.

This is one of the few receviers that can put any video input up to 1080p.
Audio:
130 watts per channel is just what you need, in any case you can buy a 100 or 110 watts per channel witout notice the diference because watts are not lineal to decibels.. so 100 or 130 watts is almost the same BUT you have to check the distorsion level.. this recevier has a little distorsion at 95% volume.. which is great because sound still clear and you can hear voice, metal, or anything very good and clear.
Power:
I use this receiver with "energy" speakers, this speakers are Klipsch family, 200 watts rms, great sound.. We test this reciver+speakers vs Bose Accoustimass 16+Marantz 130 watts, and Bose can't do nothig vs this system... Great sound, very clear, super power, etc, etc.. Bose Accoustimass was powered by a Marantz 8 series with 130 watts... I'm really, mean really pleased i didn't buy the Bose Accoustimass...

This receiver is a 7.1 channel, so I'm going to have 5.1 in the master room (movies, tv, etc) and the other 2 channel in the living room, this 2 channel are goig to be conected to a 10" subwoofer and then to the speakers.. I did all the test and work just great.. If you want to have a subwoofer in the second area you just have to buy a subwoofer with speaker conections and that all.. there is your 7.1 receiver working as a 7.2.

Audio TV out issue

I bought TX-SR806 couple of weeks ago. Has any body used "Audio TV Out" to "on" and can hear sound from all 7 channels? Owners manual on page 95 says that you can hear sound from only front left and right speakers if you use Audio TV out. I think this is what I get when I use HDMI out to get audio in my TV. I would like to know if people in this forum does not use Audio TV out.

Also, I have a Toshiba DVD recorder D-R410 connected to this receiver using HDMI. When I set audio out in Toshiba to PCM, I get only only FL and FR letters displayed on receiver front display. Onkyo tech support told me to use Dolby digital instead of PCM. He said that Onkyo thinks dolby digital setting is better than PCM which is hard to believe. Sound seems to be better from all 7speakers when I use Dolby output from Toshiba. Is it the case that PCM input from Toshiba is 2 channels to recevier but recevier decodes it to 5 o 7 channels?

I have similar issue when I use AT&T Uverse DVR motorola VIP1216. I only get FR and FL displayed on front. There is no way my DVR allows me to change it to Dolby Digital. I heard that it may be possible to get Dolby if I use fiber optic cable but then I cann't use HDMI which is good for video.

I picked this item up about a month ago and only used it for the first two days...It has been in the shop for three weeks now and the shop is still waiting for parts. The rumor was if the serial number ended with a (S) it should not have the blue dot problem through the HDMI cable...(NOT TRUE) This receiver has the blue dot problem and is very annoying when trying to watch a movie. Onkyo is aware of the problem and still sells the item when they know it is a defective product. I have bought other onkyo receivers before and was very happy. I paid for a new receiver and straight out of the box it has to go to a repair shop. If I didn't have it at the shop for so long I would have returned it for another brand or model. It sucks that the company knows it is selling defective products to its customers straight out of the box...they just seem to think it's okay to have the customer send it to the shop for over three weeks and deal with the problem ourselves. The audio seemed to have sound good when i Heard it for those two days. i love this receiver.i got this one to replace an older analog onkyo which was a very good receiver but it didn't have hdmi which i needed to run my blueray.i had trouble deciding between the 805 and the 806.my brother has the 805 and i was blown away by the sound quality.the deciding factor was the weight.my cabinet just wouldn't support the 50+ lbs of the 805.plus i think the 805 has been discontinued.i may be wrong though.

I was comparing this unit with a yamaha 663, since I have owned yamaha products for many years. R-9, RXV992, RXV995. Never had a problem with them, and had them for many years.
I took a risk with this unit, since there was heat issues, and heat is a killer for electronics. I always used a cooling fan for all my receivers.
This definitely gets pretty warm, and I have it in an enclosure, so I added additional ventilation and keep a cooling fan running on top.
So far, so good.
The unit has exceeded my expectation. The video upscaling works pretty darn good.
The sound is a little harsher than my Yamahas, but not obtrusively.
Setup was pretty easy and the audyssey works. I prefer to config my own settings, but the audyssey did a good job.
Has more than enough power and of course 7.1 channels. I had to go out and get new surrounds to experience it, and on movies. This thing rocks.

I was skeptical about buying this receiver. I had always bought Pioneer receivers in the past. When I opened it, the box was chewed up a bit, and I have begun to expect that from Amazon.com, my main concern was whether I will actually get a new product from them, instead of a returned and open item. this was new, and initially I tried it without using the manual, since I have been using similar products for a very long time. It sounded horrible. Also, I was using Sony S300 Bluray player, with an HDMI connection. I used the auto set-up with the microphone for Onkyo, and the sound improved dramatically, but still no Dolby HD-Master or Dolby TrueHD, which was the reason for buying a new Receiver. I found that SOnly Bluray player actually processed my sound before sending it out through the HDMI, and the S300 was not compatible with those 2 new types of sounds. It was ver disappointing to me, so I had to wait a while to get a new Bluray player (Samsung BD-P3600). The change was so dramatic thatI cannot believe it. The Onkyo sounds just incredible and the Samsung Bluray player was just as good. I now can hears every little sound made by the movie. I finally decided to update my aging audio system and after much research I went with an integrated system to tie in my 1080p 50" plasma... i could not be happier with my choice of the Onyko sr806. I am using vintage Klipsch Heresy's and Cornwall's as speakers and the system is awesome.... Crisp, Clean, and poweful.

I would have thought that perhaps the nature of the klipsch heritage/vinatge speaker would have produced a thin sound, but it's not true. If anyone is considering this system as an alternative to other $1000 systems, take the chance... it's all here. I am not syaing that other $1000 system wont do the job, but so will the sr806 at roughly 600.

First - I want to start with how happy I am/was with Amazon; my purchase went as smooth as I could ever expect. To keep it quick, I ordered on a Sunday and received my Onkyo the very next Tuesday (I'm close to a distribution center). WOW!!! Now that's service.

I purchased the Onkyo TX-SR806 to replace a perfectly good Yamaha RX-V861 (861) because I wanted to be able to decode/play "HD" codes. It was a plus this received was rated my Onkyo to have almost 30 more watts/channel than my Yammy' (although there was a little problem with that later that I touch on). I thought it looked nicer than my Yammy' too.

Set-up was pretty straight forward. I did like Onkyo provided speaker wire labels that you could color code to the terminal on the back of the receiver. Yes - it sounds pretty simple, but I have a DVD player, VCR, PS2, PS3, and a satelite box, along with 7.1 surround sound, so I have a LOT of wires behind my entertainment center. I like the on-screen display (OSD) better (it still took some getting used to), although I preferred the OSD from a Yamaha HTR5590 that I had before. I used the Audyssey feature and it was good, although I made some changes beyond because my listening room is horrible for surround sound.

The performance of the TX-SR806 is great. For those who've had problems with the "blue dots" in the past, I suggest looking at the serial number of the unit (there's a label on the back panel - lower edge, and a couple on the box itself). Mine had been altered and the last digit was now an "S" which many have speculated to be a run of units that have been updated by Onkyo to fix the "blue dot" problem. So far *knock on wood* I haven't had any of these issues. It pushes my 4 ohm Cerwin Vega VS150 front speakers with ease and gives them a good workout. It has a bunch of great sound fields and the only complaint I have, really, is that one can't send surround channels of a 5.1 source to the back surrounds, so you have to use an "EX" sound field to do it. It makes sense to me because of the Zone 2 capability, but I was able to do this on my 861 and it had Zone 2 also. It's not a big deal though, because it wasn't like my 861 was really making a true 7.1 sound anyways because the source wasn't a 7.1 source. I make up for it with just using a "EX"-like field, like I mentioned.

Heat is the biggest concern for me. This baby runs pretty warm to start with, but I always think the cooler the better (within reason) and try to be proactive. I've literally spent the last month figuring a way to configure my enclosed (on the front only) cabinet to offer the receiver the best ventilation and put together a cooling fan system. I have about five-inches of space above the receiver and have mounted two 120mm fans blowing/pulling right into the rear center of the receiver (where it seems the most heat comes from)and a 90* thermostatic switch that turns off at 80*. These are too loud, but only run every few minutes and only for a few minutes. When this receiver is set to 4 ohm mode, the current is said to be reduced to the point to where clipping is a very high possibility because it reduces power to less than 60 watts per channel. This is great for heat, but I like to listen to my movies/music loud and I don't want to threaten my speakers. Running in 6 ohm mode makes a lot more heat than 4 ohms, and is not recommended. When I replace the VS150s, they'll probably be with smaller 8 ohm speakers and there won't be this concern.

In conclusion, I am very happy with this receiver. If there were few things I could change, they would be the 4 ohm performance, 7.1 surround sound decoding from 5.1 sources, and OSD, respectively. I know there are other receivers that do these areas better, but not at this price. I think it you give this baby enough ventilation heat won't be a problem, but just be careful if you have 4 ohm speakers.

After owning two Yamaha receivers (an R-100 and a DSP-A3090), I've become a big Yamaha fan. After decades of service, both still perform flawlessly. They're built like tanks and have that almost intangible aura of 'quality'. Both are capable of driving my 4ohm speakers to realistic levels without clipping. Both were top of the line in their time. Neither do hdmi switching however so when it finally made sense to buy an hdmi switch, receivers with hdmi switching appeared to be the better value. I have external amplification for my center and mains and the Onkyo has pre-outs for external amplification. The Onkyo pre-amp specs were about as good as it gets, the reviews mostly solid but bottom line, for the price, nothing else I found had the same bang for the buck. So after about 3 weeks of living with it, I'd have to say 'save your receipt'. You can literally heat a small room with this receiver. Even with the 4ohm mains using external amplification, you could literally fry an egg on top of the case. I've owned many electronic products over the years, over clocked computers and lived with electronics housed in cabinets without much ventilation. I work for a company that manufactures many non-consumer, heavy duty electronic products but nothing, nothing I've ever encountered releases this much heat into the room as the 806 (except for an electric floor heater in my garage). Heat + electronics usually equal a short life. I suspect that I'll be lucky to get three years out of this. I probably should return it but I have it installed in a tricky location and reluctantly purchased an additional cooling fan for it. I'm going to give it a go. If it dies after a couple years, I'll go back to Yamaha. In the mean time, here are a few tips: 1) do not try to drive anything but speakers rated at 8ohms. The 806 has a 4ohm setting but at that setting the power rating drops to almost un-useable levels. If you try driving 4ohm speakers at the 8ohm setting, the amp can get so hot that you risk fire (only in my opinion) or damaging your speakers from clipping. 2) if you install this in a cabinet, make sure you have front to back ventilation and at least six inches on top. Do not block airflow by placing any other component on top of this receiver. 3) buy an external fan and place it on top of the receiver on the right side with the fan aiming up so it sucks heat out of the receiver. I bought the fan from CoolerGuys:[...] To sum up: the 806 can make sense as a high functioning, low cost, hdmi video switching pre-amp but I have concern over the amount of heat this generates. Quite frankly, if I had to do it over again, I'd probably go with Denon or Yamaha even if it meant spending a couple hundred more. The heat issue seems to be a common theme among Onkyo receivers.

UPDATE: the cooling fan I purchased completely solved the extreme heat issue. Evidently all the 806 needed was a little help lifting and diffusing the heat that was collecting inside the receiver. I placed it on top of the receiver blowing upward. The unit has been updated to stop the blue dots that earlier owners had problems with. I had an Onkyo TX-SR700 that I loved and will still keep for backup or use in another room (no THX certification). I'm very pleased with this machine. I needed to add a HT system in a small 14x16 room after moving into a new house, and I only wanted to spend a few thousand dollars. (I have about $30k in my audio system.) That meant going with a receiver rather than separates. I am very pleased with this receiver. It is solidly built, has plenty of features and plenty of power. It plays loud and clean. The Audessy speaker setup and equalization is a great feature. It is very configurable. The menus are very intuitive - I don't need to keep the manual by the couch. And I especially like the way it automatically senses the program material and gives me the appropriate audio and video settings without me having to do anything. As I switch back and forth from between regular and HD programming on my cable box, it automatically senses both the video resolution and audio program material and makes the appropriate adjustments to screen resolution and audio signal decoding with no manual adjustments required.

There are only 2 things it lacks:
1. A switched 110V outlet on the back
2. A digital output to Zone 2 (it is analog only)

But I LOVE the Zone 2. I never knew I needed it until I had it. The unit has separate speaker outputs for Zone 2 that use channels 6&7, or I can send a stereo source output to the preamp in my main system. The bottom line is that I effectively have 2 systems - The kids can watch a movie, TV or game in full 5.1 sound in the TV room while the adults listen to music from the CD, radio, or cable box in the living room. That's a GREAT feature and very useful.

Overall I am very pleased and think this unit is a tremendous bargain.

BTW, I bought a Harmony One remote to control this and everything else and it works great. My wife loves it! She presses one button and between the remote and receiver, everything is setup perfectly. well it seems like i got a GREAT DEAL on my 806. i purchased it for $620 back in feb-09
as i learned the receiver, i like the audyssey settings......yet an SPL METER is much more accurate and delivered even better speaker balance.
the sound from my 806 is incredible.
i run an all polk setup
center: polk cs1
front l/r: polk t90e (euro monitor 60s)
rear: polk FXI3 bipole/dipole speakers
sub: AA HD 12" sub

back to the 806, the sound i get is very clear & 'warm'.
i have the receiver at the bottom of my cabinet and it IS ENCLOSED.
there is 2 inches on the left/right side and about 4 inches at the top. i have NEVER experienced the receiver running hot as some others have claimed.
maybe it runs hot for them as they have the receiver enclosed in the front as well(glass for example)
if i had to do it all over again, i would buy the 806 in a heartbeat.
the multiple hdmi inputs are what i crave.
i do NOT use the video upscaling of the 806. i pass it along as 'thru' so my directv native resolutions come thru to the tv.
i get NO DELAY between audio & video when changing from hd to non hd channels.

my ps3 sounds beautiful in lossless audio. some people dont see a need to upgrade to a lossless receiver, but the second they HEAR the lossless difference.......they want to upgrade.

in ending, dont fool yourself, this receiver is a GREAT RECEIVER.
the only thing i would change is i want 'volume normalization'.....meaning when a commercial comes on, the receiver will adjust the volume so it wont sound so loud. the onkyo 876 has this feature, but for $500 extra,.....it is NOT worth it.

I really didn't want to buy a receiver. On top of that, I really didn't want an Onkyo--I didn't know much about it and the Yamahas were something I'd had a good track record with. I had to get a receiver because mine was just too old for any of these connections--Composite Video was the best it had to offer. I passed on Yamaha because the price difference at the time was insane.

Consider me impressed: the back of the TX-SR 806 is bristling with connectors, just about anything I could imagine. It even has plugs for Sirius or XM Satellite Radio adapters. You should know that Satellite Radio will require purchase of an antenna and visible access to the sky--in a specific direction, depending where you live. [...]

As for the rest, I purchased HDMI cables...and was a bit exasperated. We had a few video problems on my Samsung PN58A550 television that were specific to the receiver, and, ha-ha, we didn't specifically buy HDMI 1.3a. Seems like an industry-wide scam, given the quick version changes and the added cost, but purchasing 1.3a stopped screen flicker and audio weirdness.

There is one other problem you should be aware of: on the PS3, some Blu-Ray titles will broadcast blue snow in the black spaces. It can get especially bad--I noticed it most in Gran Tursimo 5 Prologue--and again this is an issue with the Onkyo, not the PS3. I tried multiple configurations and the only solution was that the Onkyo can't properly pass-through a 1080p signal, so you have to downgrade your console a notch to output 1080i (I've read this happens with XBox 360s, too). You take care of this problem by stepping through a configuration wizard on the PS3: in the System menu, there's an option for video output settings, and in one step is a series of checkboxes for the different resolutions. Uncheck the top-most resolution and your signal will pass through without the blue snow. On the Onkyo, I have told it that HDMI is "Pass-Through", which means, "Don't do anything with the video signal you get coming in"...because I'm letting the PS3 handle it. You may also find the problem fixed if you don't send audio through the HDMI--maybe all that traffic on one HDMI cable is what's corrupting the signal? I don't know. These minor annoyances keep the TX-SR 806 from a 5-star rating.

When it comes to sound, the Onkyo rises back to the top: it really does an excellent job of cleanly separating signals in my speakers, dumping speech into the Center channel and beautifully moderating subwoofer output: I noticed less *whump* than my Yamaha produced, and a lot more even transition into the lower ranges. The TX-SR 806 also does surprisingly well at using a 2.1 setup to make sounds positional: I spent half an hour with the included Audyssey microphone and easily set it up to properly produce sounds. That alone probably saved me hours of tinkering with menus and details that are beyond my comprehension. Flipping from one audio mode to another is easily accomplished on the remote, and I can very noticeably tell the difference: for example, "Dolby ProLogic II" for a movie, works best on a movie, while for a game, you're better off switching to "Dolby ProLogic II Game". When you want to crank up the home-theater fun, pure unfiltered lossless digital audio will blow you out of your seat and it's as easy as pressing a button.

There's a lot more that I could say--the menus offer a huge amount of options, but are not complicated, nor do they go more than 3 levels deep. The sound quality is top-notch: I think the DSP and Faroudja processing take it to the level of more expensive amplifiers, and I'm surprised at how much of a difference they make. Connections are easy to manage, can be custom labeled, and you can make your own preset configurations. If it weren't for the poor PS3 processing, I'd highly recommend this model to anyone. This is my first HDMI switching and DTS-MA/Dolby TruHD decoding receiver... AWESOME. I replaced a good 2003 Sony receiver. Had to run my Blu-ray player (Sony 550) audio to the receiver via analog cables. Although sound was awesome (all sound becomes analog before goin to your speakers) there was no EQ functionality because all processing happens in the digital realm. Now I get the benefits of HDMI and run everything through the receiver and it decodes all of the newer lossless codecs. I used the Audyssey set up and was amazed how it made everything come alive. I did adjust my sub though. With music I like huge, concert type bass. The biggest thing is with movies. My sub isn't boomy anymore and is "felt" although still moves the air.
The overall sound from the amp is clean and just sounds bigger and more detailed. I used to be a live and studio engineer so the details (high and low crossovers, eq, room set up, etc) help make the sound more fluid from all of the speakers.
