I recently purchased a new Samsung LN55B650 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color from Amazon.com to replace the old tube television set in our family room, which only supported 720p. When I replaced the TV I also wanted a new receiver that would support two zones and offer HDMI inputs/outputs. I previously had a Denon receiver, which was lacking enough inputs, so I had to purchase a separate switch for the gaming consoles. My plan with the new receiver was to get rid of the switch. Mission accomplished!

Here's a quick recap of what I like, dislike and am neutral on regarding this receiver.

=====================
PROS
=====================
+ Price: Try to find another receiver with this many options and such high quality for this low of a price.
+ AV Inputs: Lots of options here. You can have upto 5 video inputs, which can all be HDMI (v1.3A). You can also use upto 2 component inputs (analog HD) and upto 5 non-HD inputs via an S-video or standard analog video cable. I found the 5 inputs with varying options enough to hook up the three major gaming consoles, a TIVO and a cable box. If you have a separate DVD player you would need a switch, but I am using my gaming consoles to watch movies.
+ Digital Audio: You can have up to three components connected using digital audio via component or optical, which is more than your average receiver.
+ Customization/Tweaking: If you love tweaking than this a great receiver to own. The On-Screen Display (OSD) allows you to customize a ton of options like: input labels, sound delay to synchronize video with speech, customize video (e.g. screen format, resolution, etc.) and audio (e.g. sound eq mode) options by input (great feature), audio tuning options that help you make sure you have your speakers hooked up correctly and a plethora of other options that will have you tweaking for your optimal configuration.
+ Sound Quality: I really notice the difference on my surround sound setup with this receiver over my old receiver partly due to the fact that I have more digital input options, which gives me true surround sound as opposed to the simulation that many other receivers offer. Don't forget that your surround sound has equal parts speakers, amplifier, location and receiver. However, I do feel that given that everything else is setup correctly, this receiver adds the icing on the cake.

=====================
NEUTRAL
=====================
= Audio Inputs: You have enough inputs here to hook more than enough audio only devices, which is three. That was more than enough for me, since I only hooked up an iPod. However, the additional inputs allow you to expand your system. You also have a separate channel for a tuner to pick-up AM/FM, which is standard. The receiver is also iPod and Satellite Radio (Sirius/XM) ready, which means it will integrate with those products when you purchase separate components for the integration.
= Dolby Digital 7.1: While I like having the ability to support 7.1, I only have a 5.1 setup and the human ear doesn't always distinguish the difference between 5.1 and 7.1. Then again most decent receivers released in the past few years support 7.1.
= Runs Slightly Hot: I would not say that this receiver gets very hot, but I could see an issue if this were in an enclosed cabinet. At that point you might want to think about getting a small fan to keep the unit cool. I notice it runs a bit hotter than my older receiver. Not a deal breaker, but worth mentioning.

=====================
CONS
=====================
- XBOX 360 Compatibility: I should mention this because I became frustrated when hooking up my XBOX 360 and could not get the video to come through to the TV. I have the video output from the receiver to the TV set to use HDMI. However, my XBOX 360 is one of the earlier models without HDMI, so I have to hook it up to the receiver using a component cable, which is still HD, but just analog. I ended up realizing that with a 1080p video resolution selected for the XBOX 360 no video would get transferred to my TV. Something with the upscaling from the analog 1080p to the digital 1080p gets lost and I got no video on my TV. If I set my XBOX 360 to 720p the video would come through fine. I ended up just splitting the video directly to my TV and having only the audio go through the receiver, since I wanted 1080p. It's not a huge deal now, but at the time it was frustrating and it's worth noting for any XBOX 360 owners without an HDMI output.
- No Power Adapter Inputs: My older receiver offered two AC power inputs, which was nice when hooking up your various components. I was disappointed to not see that offered on this receiver, but I'm really picking at straws now.

Overall this is still my best pick without going over $1,000 for an HD receiver with multi-zone support, HDMI Inputs/Outputs, a ton of input options, great quality, tons of tweaking options and a few minor issues.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Where To Buy Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

Well I am Poor! Saved for one year to buy this TX-SR806B and the speakers. I paired it with polk monitor 70's front left and right. For the center I am using the recommended Center Polk Cs1 it is huge. However wish I got the cs2 Bigger. For the line up I got the best sub for the monitor set up the PSW10 powered subwoofer. It Is great At low level. on the dial about half will bass stuff off the walls so no need to crank it up full blast it starts cuffing..raddled who wants to blow such an expensive sub take no chances. (not turned all the way up starts to raddled but you really don't need it all the way up.) It sounds great! then I got the polk monitor 60's for the back left right and I used the Polk Audio TSi200 Bookshelf Speakers I robbed from the living room till I can purchase the monitor 50's Well I hope this helps so that's what I was running the TX-SR806B Everything was fine for two months to the day I must give a little more info about the receiver. It runs hot burning hot so I got a mini fan took the entire back off the component /TV stand to help cool it and ran the A/C At 70 degrees while I was jamming out. And the 9000 BTU window unit could not keep the room cooler them 74 while it was on! HOT! Now this was my dream radio sounds great you could wake the entire block if you wanted to I really loved it could not be live the sound I had been missing for all the years. I had been using Sony and other brands the receiver has a 2 year warranty now that's great! Ok back to the point. While using at half volume system shut off had the monster power serge and fan on it so the receiver shuts off and I figure it went into protect mode well (manual time.) Unhook every speaker wire! And wait an hr. Turn it on then turn volume to max then down again and it resets well I did it for 5 times 5 hrs. Hoping it would just turn back on nope so I call and they say it cannot be fixed by me pushing and resetting the unit. So I have to take it to ups and have it packed there way pay for $1000 ins. Just if they loose it not if it is damaged while shipping because it is broken right now. Well I live in Florida and the closest repair shop is in NY. Wow this receiver weight is around 56 lbs. So $82 to send it to the nearest repair shop. I have called and the repair shop tells me transformer defective! Power supply factory defective part! Because it was Less then two months old! So beware I am going to try to get them to pay me back the Shipping and handling, I had to pay. I will let you know what becomes of it so far no receiver for 4 weeks now Did I mention unit gets very hot and will burn you at half volume after five min. Of use.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

I bought this unit in February of 2009. One day it just quit working. I called ONkyo and they directed me to their authorized warranty repair center. That was 2 months ago. The warranty center, which is awsome, told me that Onkyo said that the parts are on back order and that I may have to wait another 1-2 months. The warranty center evaluated and called the second day I dropped it off so it wasn't their issue it is ONkyo's. If you feel like rolling the dice go ahead and buy this unit. Maybe you will get one that doesn't need any work done on it. Maybe you won't. I will never buy anything Onkyo again. But if you have money to burn go for it.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

I have had this rcvr for 4 months and love it. Unfortunately, a spike caused it to short all the outputs (even hooked up to a surge protector). Before that incident, it performed flawlessly and true. I have/had it hooked to a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 7.3's,Cerwin Vega AT-12's,a Vega sub, and an Onkyo sub for pure enjoyment at unbelievable levels of clarity and SPL. As the price is dropping tremendously, this is not something to pass up. If you have been doing research, STOP. Buy this. Also, check out the Onkyo site--It has some great deals too. I bought a refurbed DVD player to play CD's and it was dirt cheap; also looks brand new.

I had a SR804, the predecessor to this product, but it met an untimely death due to owner clumsiness. I was sick about it, but found the SR806 looked like an upgraded product. Wow was it ever. Much easier to set up, easier to navigate, and a far superior audio and video quality. The auto speaker set-up was bang on target, where with the 804 I had to make many adjustments. Great 7.1 separation and reproduction. I don't know how any other receiver could be better. Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Buying Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

I added this receiver to my home system at the same time that I added the LG BD390 Blu-Ray Player. The combined result was an absolute WOW! It also passed the wife test for you married men out there.

The hookup was similar to other Onkyo hookups. In this case I used the HDMI inputs for my Directv DVR, my HD-DVD player and the new Blu-Ray player. The 806 then outputs HDMI video to the display and automatically processes and provides the best audio option depending on the source material. This is most apparent when watching shows thru the Directv DVR where shows will be Dolby Digital, All Channel Stereo, PLII Movie and others depending on what the source signal is providing.

One of the absolute best features is the Audessy MultEQ speaker system setup. Once the speakers are wired to the unit you plug into the front panel a special microphone that you place in your listening area. IT IS BEST TO DO THIS ALL SIX TIMES THAT THE UNIT WILL ALLOW. Place the microphone at the first listening spot at ear level (a photo tripod is great for this and the microphone has an appropriate hole in its base for a tripod) and, after turning off anything that makes sound including an air conditioner, let the unit make it's sound checks. It will check each speaker in turn, note how many speakers are in the system and whether a subwoofer is attached, measure the capability of the speaker, make the proper internal adjustments and also measure the distance from each speaker to the listening position. The first test takes longest and the follow on measurements are faster because the unit already knows the basic hookup of the speaker system. The display, both on the unit and displayed on the TV screen, will tell you when to move the microphone to listening position number two. As I said, it is highly recommended that you do this all six times even if you only have two or three prime listening spots. You can do them again in the same area as the primary spots to further focus in the sound. The result of all of this is focused sound to your viewing position that makes the most of your speakers and accommodates as best as possible for your listening environment.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

The Onkyo TX-SR806S is an upgrade from a 5 year old Panasonic SA-HE200. HDMI connectivity was the number one priority for me. And it is silver - matches some of the equipment in my rack. I was also very happy to pay under $600 for this item! I am running all audio through the 806, and all video with the exception of the PC. I have a very difficult room - hardwood floors, with pocket doors behind me and on the left side of the living room. The speaker calibration worked wonders in smoothing out the sound in the room. I am hearing more from my speakers now - it's very subtle and the improvement is noticeable.

Connected devices:
JBL E20's - Front
JBL EC25 - Center
Velodyne DPS-12 - Sub
JBL E10's - Surrounds
Paradigm Atoms - Surround Backs
Toshiba HD XA2 HD DVD
Sony DHG-HDD 250 HD DVR
Sony RDR-GX300 DVD Recorder
Dish Network 501 DVR
HP Digital Entertainment Center de100c
Sony VCR
Terk HDTV I antenna
Home Theater PC with LG combo Blu-Ray/HD DVD Drive
Technics SL 1500 Mk2 Turntable
Mitsubishi WD-Y65 65" DLP RPTV

Pros:
Build quality - it's built like a tank
Ability to assign inputs and rename them, extremely flexible.
5 HDMI inputs
Ease of speaker calibration with Audyssey MultEQ
Decoding of Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio
Audio quality - The sound is very clear, detailed and clean - even at low listening levels thanks to THX Loudness Plus
Phono Input - vinyl sounds fantastic through the Onkyo.
FM Tuner - Very sensitive, picks up weaker stations much better than my previous receiver

Cons:
It is big. Sticks out of the back of my a/v rack.
No switched outlet on the rear of the receiver.
TV has to be on to listen to a cd in the HD DVD player. HDMI authentication issue. I use the Sony DVD player instead.
Runs a little warm, but not too hot. Placed a modified pc case fan on top of the hottest part of the case. Also placed some Audio-Technica audio insulators (AT 605) under the feet of the 806 to allow air to pass through. Temps dropped from 56C to 41C. Cool to the touch now.
HDMI switching lag - some delay when changing inputs. Audio lag of about 5 seconds when in FF, Skip, RW modes with the DVR.
Occasional clicking when changing audio formats - drives my dog nuts.
Although you probably won't use it, the volume knob feels really cheap.
No backlit remote. Not a deal breaker. Using a Harmony 880 remote.

Overall, I am quite pleased with the performance of the Onkyo TX-SR806.

Cheapest Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

I've been using the Onkyo TX SR 806 for about 3 months now , bought it on Amzon for $620 5 months ago, but due to house renovations, it sat in the box for awhile. The reason I purchased it was to start all new, and utilize HDMI inputs for all the new components, i.e. Netflix ROKU, DVD, CD, DVR, etc.. I'm sure I'm not using it to its maximum funtions, but I bought it so that I could run the 5.1 surround sound in the family room, and still have the powered Zone 2 run my porch stero speakers. I got a little fancy and bought a Niles 4 Speaker Selecter (not an amplifier), so that I can play music on the porch, living room, and kitchen off the powered Zone 2 connector, and still let other watch 5.1 surround sound in family room. Instruction manual does not go into much info on the Zone 2 - basically, you keep pushing the Zone 2 speaker until you see the source you want to play. The Onkyo does seem to run hot, so I'm not comfortable closing the cabinet door (I've got it on the bottom with the DVR about 18 inches above it).Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

First of all, I love Amazon customer support, Initially i ordered for 906 receiver, it looks too heavy for me and my room. Immidiatly exchanged with 806 receiver. It is awsome, it may not be delivering the picture as 906, but with the 1080 upgrade i can feel the difference. As like some other complained abt blue screen when switching the components, i dont feel that.

I bought this after lot of research and hooked up with Klipsch Quintet speakers (5.1). The Sound is great, im right into a IMAX theater.

I would highly recommend this product.

Previously i used to watch 1 movie in a week, now almost 1 in a day. Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Low Price Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

...without the speakers, of course! Setup with this unit is a breeze, thanks to the Audyssey system. Simply plug the supplied microphone in and the easy-like-sunday-morning magic starts to happen. The unit did a fairly accurate job of setting up the parameters in order to make movie watching very next-level.

Sound quality - again, phenomenal. I am using Polk Audio LSi7s all the way around and have a Boston center (honestly forgot which). I'm in a family room that has a cathedral ceiling, so there's a LOT of space to fill. This unit doesn't disappoint.

I'd go on, but I'm at work. Great unit, and you'd be hard-pressed to duplicate its performance/feature set within 500-1000 more.

Buy it.

Lowest Price Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

I just set this up with my brand new speaker system and it only partly works. Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Silver) After setting up the unit and listening to my iPod for about an hour, I switch over to the tuner/receiver. Then I tried to change the listening mode by pressing the "Music" button on the remote, but landing upon the "Orchestra" setting the most HORRIBLE noise I have ever heard was emitted by the speakers. Pressing the "Music" button again led to an even louder more horrible noise and then the Amp shut off. Upon turning it on again, it was in the "Mono" sound setting, so I pressed the "Music" button and when the 'pure music' setting started but I was curious and surfed the options and again on "orchestra" the Horrible noise started and pressing "Music" again made a louder noise and the Amp shut off.

The issue is that, the "Music" button is a one-way menu and to surf through to a specific setting it requires circling through the entire menu. Plus, everytime the power is turned-off the receiver turns-on in the 'Mono' setting so if you, say want to listen to the radio in stereo, you have to press the "Music" button, but if you miss the stereo setting and want to return to it, the system has to be turned-off, or you run the risk of 1. losing your hearing and/or 2. blowing you VERY EXPENSIVE speakers.

I am not happy with this in anyway and do fear that the noise that was produced by the amp DID damage my speakers.

I have contact Onkyo and will update this review with details about working with the company of this issue. This was Serial number 0824DD3881022319

I'll save you the time of looking for the perfect surround system for the money. Buy the Infinity Primus series speakers & add the Samsung LN52A650 52-Inch (or smaller screens in this series) 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color, an HD input (I have DirecTV) and Blue-Ray player & you are DONE! My system cost me about $3500, but man is it worth every cent. This Onkyo receiver & the Primus speakers generate crystal-clear sound with about 30 diffecent styles of output (including THX) & wait 'till you hear the 300 Watt Primus bass... WOW!

I can not say anything wrong about this product. Onkyo is known to provide the best receivers out there, and this model does not disappoint. I set up my FIOS, PS3, and Wii with this receiver and I have not had one problem with it.

I trust Onkyo over any other brands, and I like the fact that Best Buy doesn't carry it because I think Best Buy isn't very good with Audio products.

This receiver will be up to date for many years with so many HDMI inputs and the HD Audio capabilities. Not a lot of blu ray players have been built to fully test this receiver so I can't wait for better sound quality.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

The Onkyo TX SR806 is a replacement for an 11 year old Yamaha so I may simply be dazzled by modernity but I think this unit is terrific. I had satellite, DVD, Popcorn and 2 computers to hook up so maximum HDMI inputs were top of my needs and the price, of course, had to be sensible. The remote simplifies component on/off and switching to a one hand two button push. No cons thus far but had it less than a month. This reciever works well. It would have rated this reciever a 5 but the 1st one I purchased had a major issue. While I was having the system professionally installed to go with my 7.1 in wall surround sound system the fan blew-out..It was in a well venalated area, so till this day Myself and the installer dont know what could have caused it, but with the warranty they sent me another one hoping I wasn't going to have the same issue and so far it has worked great. Taking in mind that I have a small desktop fan blowing cool air over-it just to help out the reciever because they do get real hot at times, but overall I'm very satisified. I really like the Zone2 option. While my kid is watching a movie upstairs, I can plug in my Ipod and listen to it out in the backyard at the same time....A great buy for all the functions it can do!!!Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

This receiver blows away anything in its price range! I replaced a weak and worn down Harmon Kardon that unfortunatly had a bad run in with a heavy center channel falling from 5 ft. above and I could'nt be happier that it did!! This is my first receiver so maybe this review can't make any diference.. BUT.. I have to say sound is really great and it has a lot of features that you can enjoy.
Video:
This is one of the few receviers that can put any video input up to 1080p.
Audio:
130 watts per channel is just what you need, in any case you can buy a 100 or 110 watts per channel witout notice the diference because watts are not lineal to decibels.. so 100 or 130 watts is almost the same BUT you have to check the distorsion level.. this recevier has a little distorsion at 95% volume.. which is great because sound still clear and you can hear voice, metal, or anything very good and clear.
Power:
I use this receiver with "energy" speakers, this speakers are Klipsch family, 200 watts rms, great sound.. We test this reciver+speakers vs Bose Accoustimass 16+Marantz 130 watts, and Bose can't do nothig vs this system... Great sound, very clear, super power, etc, etc.. Bose Accoustimass was powered by a Marantz 8 series with 130 watts... I'm really, mean really pleased i didn't buy the Bose Accoustimass...

You must have this receiver and this speakers..

This receiver is a 7.1 channel, so I'm going to have 5.1 in the master room (movies, tv, etc) and the other 2 channel in the living room, this 2 channel are goig to be conected to a 10" subwoofer and then to the speakers.. I did all the test and work just great.. If you want to have a subwoofer in the second area you just have to buy a subwoofer with speaker conections and that all.. there is your 7.1 receiver working as a 7.2.

Not only did this receiver tie my components together in a way that they much more automatically configure themselves, the sound is dramatically better than before. I think the microphone made a huge difference -- I have a pretty good surround speaker system, but it never sounded as good as I knew it could. The minute I calibrated the sound with the included microphone, it became as good as I hoped it would. Now, I'm happier listening to music in the theater than I am listening to my dedicated high-end stereo system.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Audio TV out issue

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought TX-SR806 couple of weeks ago. Has any body used "Audio TV Out" to "on" and can hear sound from all 7 channels? Owners manual on page 95 says that you can hear sound from only front left and right speakers if you use Audio TV out. I think this is what I get when I use HDMI out to get audio in my TV. I would like to know if people in this forum does not use Audio TV out.

Also, I have a Toshiba DVD recorder D-R410 connected to this receiver using HDMI. When I set audio out in Toshiba to PCM, I get only only FL and FR letters displayed on receiver front display. Onkyo tech support told me to use Dolby digital instead of PCM. He said that Onkyo thinks dolby digital setting is better than PCM which is hard to believe. Sound seems to be better from all 7speakers when I use Dolby output from Toshiba. Is it the case that PCM input from Toshiba is 2 channels to recevier but recevier decodes it to 5 o 7 channels?

I have similar issue when I use AT&T Uverse DVR motorola VIP1216. I only get FR and FL displayed on front. There is no way my DVR allows me to change it to Dolby Digital. I heard that it may be possible to get Dolby if I use fiber optic cable but then I cann't use HDMI which is good for video.

Your help is appreciated.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

I picked this item up about a month ago and only used it for the first two days...It has been in the shop for three weeks now and the shop is still waiting for parts. The rumor was if the serial number ended with a (S) it should not have the blue dot problem through the HDMI cable...(NOT TRUE) This receiver has the blue dot problem and is very annoying when trying to watch a movie. Onkyo is aware of the problem and still sells the item when they know it is a defective product. I have bought other onkyo receivers before and was very happy. I paid for a new receiver and straight out of the box it has to go to a repair shop. If I didn't have it at the shop for so long I would have returned it for another brand or model. It sucks that the company knows it is selling defective products to its customers straight out of the box...they just seem to think it's okay to have the customer send it to the shop for over three weeks and deal with the problem ourselves. The audio seemed to have sound good when i Heard it for those two days. I don't know if I will buy Onkyo products anymore since the way they deal with defective items sucks!Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

i love this receiver.i got this one to replace an older analog onkyo which was a very good receiver but it didn't have hdmi which i needed to run my blueray.i had trouble deciding between the 805 and the 806.my brother has the 805 and i was blown away by the sound quality.the deciding factor was the weight.my cabinet just wouldn't support the 50+ lbs of the 805.plus i think the 805 has been discontinued.i may be wrong though.
ok, back to the 806.setup was super easy.i love the onscreen display.the setup mic is a must.i had the speakers set in a matter of mins.it switches between components with no problem.the sound will blow you away.i'm waiting for the day my neighbors decide to call the cops.(no i don't live in an apartment either)watching blueray movies is just like being at the theater.i have it connected to a hitachi 52" hd ready tv,sony bd-350 blueray,hd cable box and a ps3.the remote is ok but they could have given it some back lighting.i don't really use anyway.the logitec harmony 880 remote works great with it and all other components.some reviews were talking about over heating but if you give about 2 to 3 inches of space on top it will be fine.mine stays on for several hrs a day and i haven't had any problems.the blue dot issue has been fixed.make sure it has an S beside the serial num.this means no blue dots.i don't see myself having to upgrade for many years to come.this receiver will handle anything you throw at it,and more.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Where To Buy Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

I have not had any of the issues some others have noted in their reviews. Not running hot at all. I connected this unit to a sony kdl46xbr6 as well as ps3, hd cable, so video upconverting is not an issue. The receiver powers all klipsch speakers and is the most incredible sound I have ever heard. Very easy to set up using the hdmi inputs. Highly recomend this unit.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

I was comparing this unit with a yamaha 663, since I have owned yamaha products for many years. R-9, RXV992, RXV995. Never had a problem with them, and had them for many years.
I took a risk with this unit, since there was heat issues, and heat is a killer for electronics. I always used a cooling fan for all my receivers.
This definitely gets pretty warm, and I have it in an enclosure, so I added additional ventilation and keep a cooling fan running on top.
So far, so good.
The unit has exceeded my expectation. The video upscaling works pretty darn good.
The sound is a little harsher than my Yamahas, but not obtrusively.
Setup was pretty easy and the audyssey works. I prefer to config my own settings, but the audyssey did a good job.
Has more than enough power and of course 7.1 channels. I had to go out and get new surrounds to experience it, and on movies. This thing rocks.

I was skeptical about buying this receiver. I had always bought Pioneer receivers in the past. When I opened it, the box was chewed up a bit, and I have begun to expect that from Amazon.com, my main concern was whether I will actually get a new product from them, instead of a returned and open item. this was new, and initially I tried it without using the manual, since I have been using similar products for a very long time. It sounded horrible. Also, I was using Sony S300 Bluray player, with an HDMI connection. I used the auto set-up with the microphone for Onkyo, and the sound improved dramatically, but still no Dolby HD-Master or Dolby TrueHD, which was the reason for buying a new Receiver. I found that SOnly Bluray player actually processed my sound before sending it out through the HDMI, and the S300 was not compatible with those 2 new types of sounds. It was ver disappointing to me, so I had to wait a while to get a new Bluray player (Samsung BD-P3600). The change was so dramatic thatI cannot believe it. The Onkyo sounds just incredible and the Samsung Bluray player was just as good. I now can hears every little sound made by the movie. I highly recommend both the Onkyo receiver and the Samsung Bluray BD-P3600, try it and you will never buy anything else.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

This is a great product. A good replacement for the 705. The only small hang up I have is that in1 and in2 are tied to EITHER HDMI1 and HMDI2 OR component1 and component2, not both which means you lose two HDMI inputs if you are using the component inputs as well. Low Price Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

The 806 is a quality receiver. The speaker setup is a huge upgrade in sound quality. I thought I was going to have to upgrade my surround and sub speakers. But after completing the speaker auto set-up with the included mic I was amazed how well my speakers now perform. I think I can hold off on buying more speakers now. Wow major difference from my 8 year old Sony. The cleaner performance coming from my sub just tells me I have been suffering with a muddy bass sound all this time not because I had a budget quality sub but because I didn't have a good receiver. You don't know better till you know better. So now I tell my wife, "See how much money I saved buying this big monster Onkyo. I don't need to spend thousands on new speakers!"Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Silver)

I finally decided to update my aging audio system and after much research I went with an integrated system to tie in my 1080p 50" plasma... i could not be happier with my choice of the Onyko sr806. I am using vintage Klipsch Heresy's and Cornwall's as speakers and the system is awesome.... Crisp, Clean, and poweful.

I would have thought that perhaps the nature of the klipsch heritage/vinatge speaker would have produced a thin sound, but it's not true. If anyone is considering this system as an alternative to other $1000 systems, take the chance... it's all here. I am not syaing that other $1000 system wont do the job, but so will the sr806 at roughly 600.

This is my third Onkyo receiver. I love the number of HDMI jacks it has (5) and the fact that it can upconvert signals out through the HDMI out jack from analog and components inputs (although it does not always work perfectly). In addition, the receiver produces a very rich sound, has a great onscreen menu interface and allows for easy speaker set-up using the Audyssey microphone. Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Top Quality

So far, I have no real complaints. The learning curve is high, especially if you are used to a model from say, 10 years ago, as there are so many options for sound processing, but I would definitely recommend this receiver for anyone building a home theater system who may want to continue adding/upgrading over the years, as it is loaded with features that will not be obsolete for many years to come. It is powerful enough, and the power is clean enough to drive even the best consumer (and likely some pro) speakers. Calibration is very easy as well, and with the included microphone, it will optimize the speaker calibration by calculating the proper volumes, etc., for many points in a given room, small or large.

You won't be disappointed.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

First - I want to start with how happy I am/was with Amazon; my purchase went as smooth as I could ever expect. To keep it quick, I ordered on a Sunday and received my Onkyo the very next Tuesday (I'm close to a distribution center). WOW!!! Now that's service.

I purchased the Onkyo TX-SR806 to replace a perfectly good Yamaha RX-V861 (861) because I wanted to be able to decode/play "HD" codes. It was a plus this received was rated my Onkyo to have almost 30 more watts/channel than my Yammy' (although there was a little problem with that later that I touch on). I thought it looked nicer than my Yammy' too.

Set-up was pretty straight forward. I did like Onkyo provided speaker wire labels that you could color code to the terminal on the back of the receiver. Yes - it sounds pretty simple, but I have a DVD player, VCR, PS2, PS3, and a satelite box, along with 7.1 surround sound, so I have a LOT of wires behind my entertainment center. I like the on-screen display (OSD) better (it still took some getting used to), although I preferred the OSD from a Yamaha HTR5590 that I had before. I used the Audyssey feature and it was good, although I made some changes beyond because my listening room is horrible for surround sound.

The performance of the TX-SR806 is great. For those who've had problems with the "blue dots" in the past, I suggest looking at the serial number of the unit (there's a label on the back panel - lower edge, and a couple on the box itself). Mine had been altered and the last digit was now an "S" which many have speculated to be a run of units that have been updated by Onkyo to fix the "blue dot" problem. So far *knock on wood* I haven't had any of these issues. It pushes my 4 ohm Cerwin Vega VS150 front speakers with ease and gives them a good workout. It has a bunch of great sound fields and the only complaint I have, really, is that one can't send surround channels of a 5.1 source to the back surrounds, so you have to use an "EX" sound field to do it. It makes sense to me because of the Zone 2 capability, but I was able to do this on my 861 and it had Zone 2 also. It's not a big deal though, because it wasn't like my 861 was really making a true 7.1 sound anyways because the source wasn't a 7.1 source. I make up for it with just using a "EX"-like field, like I mentioned.

Heat is the biggest concern for me. This baby runs pretty warm to start with, but I always think the cooler the better (within reason) and try to be proactive. I've literally spent the last month figuring a way to configure my enclosed (on the front only) cabinet to offer the receiver the best ventilation and put together a cooling fan system. I have about five-inches of space above the receiver and have mounted two 120mm fans blowing/pulling right into the rear center of the receiver (where it seems the most heat comes from)and a 90* thermostatic switch that turns off at 80*. These are too loud, but only run every few minutes and only for a few minutes. When this receiver is set to 4 ohm mode, the current is said to be reduced to the point to where clipping is a very high possibility because it reduces power to less than 60 watts per channel. This is great for heat, but I like to listen to my movies/music loud and I don't want to threaten my speakers. Running in 6 ohm mode makes a lot more heat than 4 ohms, and is not recommended. When I replace the VS150s, they'll probably be with smaller 8 ohm speakers and there won't be this concern.

In conclusion, I am very happy with this receiver. If there were few things I could change, they would be the 4 ohm performance, 7.1 surround sound decoding from 5.1 sources, and OSD, respectively. I know there are other receivers that do these areas better, but not at this price. I think it you give this baby enough ventilation heat won't be a problem, but just be careful if you have 4 ohm speakers.

*** I cited some benchtests from "Secrets of Home Theater's" review of this receiver. This was a really good review and goes in-depth into the TX-SR806 *** Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

After owning two Yamaha receivers (an R-100 and a DSP-A3090), I've become a big Yamaha fan. After decades of service, both still perform flawlessly. They're built like tanks and have that almost intangible aura of 'quality'. Both are capable of driving my 4ohm speakers to realistic levels without clipping. Both were top of the line in their time. Neither do hdmi switching however so when it finally made sense to buy an hdmi switch, receivers with hdmi switching appeared to be the better value. I have external amplification for my center and mains and the Onkyo has pre-outs for external amplification. The Onkyo pre-amp specs were about as good as it gets, the reviews mostly solid but bottom line, for the price, nothing else I found had the same bang for the buck. So after about 3 weeks of living with it, I'd have to say 'save your receipt'. You can literally heat a small room with this receiver. Even with the 4ohm mains using external amplification, you could literally fry an egg on top of the case. I've owned many electronic products over the years, over clocked computers and lived with electronics housed in cabinets without much ventilation. I work for a company that manufactures many non-consumer, heavy duty electronic products but nothing, nothing I've ever encountered releases this much heat into the room as the 806 (except for an electric floor heater in my garage). Heat + electronics usually equal a short life. I suspect that I'll be lucky to get three years out of this. I probably should return it but I have it installed in a tricky location and reluctantly purchased an additional cooling fan for it. I'm going to give it a go. If it dies after a couple years, I'll go back to Yamaha. In the mean time, here are a few tips: 1) do not try to drive anything but speakers rated at 8ohms. The 806 has a 4ohm setting but at that setting the power rating drops to almost un-useable levels. If you try driving 4ohm speakers at the 8ohm setting, the amp can get so hot that you risk fire (only in my opinion) or damaging your speakers from clipping. 2) if you install this in a cabinet, make sure you have front to back ventilation and at least six inches on top. Do not block airflow by placing any other component on top of this receiver. 3) buy an external fan and place it on top of the receiver on the right side with the fan aiming up so it sucks heat out of the receiver. I bought the fan from CoolerGuys:[...] To sum up: the 806 can make sense as a high functioning, low cost, hdmi video switching pre-amp but I have concern over the amount of heat this generates. Quite frankly, if I had to do it over again, I'd probably go with Denon or Yamaha even if it meant spending a couple hundred more. The heat issue seems to be a common theme among Onkyo receivers.

UPDATE: the cooling fan I purchased completely solved the extreme heat issue. Evidently all the 806 needed was a little help lifting and diffusing the heat that was collecting inside the receiver. I placed it on top of the receiver blowing upward. I wouldn't be surprised if the fan added years to the life of the receiver.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)
The Onkyo TX-SR806B sounds great (after some extensive tweaking but that is the THX certification). The video up covert works great with NO problems. The unit has been updated to stop the blue dots that earlier owners had problems with. I had an Onkyo TX-SR700 that I loved and will still keep for backup or use in another room (no THX certification). I have a PS3 which sucks because the PS3 doesn't bit stream Dolby TrueHD or dts-HD Master Audio. The PS does decode and sends to the receiver as PCM 192kHz/24-bit thru HDMI. I would recommend this receiver to anyone unless you want to spend over $1,000! I purchased this unit about a month ago and have to say I am very satisfied with my decision. I was considering the Pioneer Elite VSX-92 AV Receiver vs. the Onkyo. I had heard great things about both units. The Onkyo is driving 2 Energy C-500 Front Speakers, 1 Energy C-C100 Center Channel, 2 RC-R Surround Speakers, and a Energy 12.3S Powered Subwoofer. I have to say that combined with me Panasonic PT-3000 Projector and 120" Screen, I will probably never to to the movies again. The Onkyo drives the speakers effortlessly and produces great theater sound. The unit comes with a microphone that is used in the set-up of your system, and is quite accurate. I highly recommend this unit. You will not be disappointed. You cant beat Amazons price anywhere that I found. Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

I'm very pleased with this machine. I needed to add a HT system in a small 14x16 room after moving into a new house, and I only wanted to spend a few thousand dollars. (I have about $30k in my audio system.) That meant going with a receiver rather than separates. I am very pleased with this receiver. It is solidly built, has plenty of features and plenty of power. It plays loud and clean. The Audessy speaker setup and equalization is a great feature. It is very configurable. The menus are very intuitive - I don't need to keep the manual by the couch. And I especially like the way it automatically senses the program material and gives me the appropriate audio and video settings without me having to do anything. As I switch back and forth from between regular and HD programming on my cable box, it automatically senses both the video resolution and audio program material and makes the appropriate adjustments to screen resolution and audio signal decoding with no manual adjustments required.

There are only 2 things it lacks:
1. A switched 110V outlet on the back
2. A digital output to Zone 2 (it is analog only)

But I LOVE the Zone 2. I never knew I needed it until I had it. The unit has separate speaker outputs for Zone 2 that use channels 6&7, or I can send a stereo source output to the preamp in my main system. The bottom line is that I effectively have 2 systems - The kids can watch a movie, TV or game in full 5.1 sound in the TV room while the adults listen to music from the CD, radio, or cable box in the living room. That's a GREAT feature and very useful.

Overall I am very pleased and think this unit is a tremendous bargain.

BTW, I bought a Harmony One remote to control this and everything else and it works great. My wife loves it! She presses one button and between the remote and receiver, everything is setup perfectly. It completely shields the user from the complexity of the system. It's almost like magic.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).
