I recently purchased a new Samsung LN55B650 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color from Amazon.com to replace the old tube television set in our family room, which only supported 720p. When I replaced the TV I also wanted a new receiver that would support two zones and offer HDMI inputs/outputs. I previously had a Denon receiver, which was lacking enough inputs, so I had to purchase a separate switch for the gaming consoles. My plan with the new receiver was to get rid of the switch. Mission accomplished!

Here's a quick recap of what I like, dislike and am neutral on regarding this receiver.

=====================
PROS
=====================
+ Price: Try to find another receiver with this many options and such high quality for this low of a price.
+ AV Inputs: Lots of options here. You can have upto 5 video inputs, which can all be HDMI (v1.3A). You can also use upto 2 component inputs (analog HD) and upto 5 non-HD inputs via an S-video or standard analog video cable. I found the 5 inputs with varying options enough to hook up the three major gaming consoles, a TIVO and a cable box. If you have a separate DVD player you would need a switch, but I am using my gaming consoles to watch movies.
+ Digital Audio: You can have up to three components connected using digital audio via component or optical, which is more than your average receiver.
+ Customization/Tweaking: If you love tweaking than this a great receiver to own. The On-Screen Display (OSD) allows you to customize a ton of options like: input labels, sound delay to synchronize video with speech, customize video (e.g. screen format, resolution, etc.) and audio (e.g. sound eq mode) options by input (great feature), audio tuning options that help you make sure you have your speakers hooked up correctly and a plethora of other options that will have you tweaking for your optimal configuration.
+ Sound Quality: I really notice the difference on my surround sound setup with this receiver over my old receiver partly due to the fact that I have more digital input options, which gives me true surround sound as opposed to the simulation that many other receivers offer. Don't forget that your surround sound has equal parts speakers, amplifier, location and receiver. However, I do feel that given that everything else is setup correctly, this receiver adds the icing on the cake.

NEUTRAL
=====================
= Audio Inputs: You have enough inputs here to hook more than enough audio only devices, which is three. That was more than enough for me, since I only hooked up an iPod. However, the additional inputs allow you to expand your system. You also have a separate channel for a tuner to pick-up AM/FM, which is standard. The receiver is also iPod and Satellite Radio (Sirius/XM) ready, which means it will integrate with those products when you purchase separate components for the integration.
= Dolby Digital 7.1: While I like having the ability to support 7.1, I only have a 5.1 setup and the human ear doesn't always distinguish the difference between 5.1 and 7.1. Then again most decent receivers released in the past few years support 7.1.
= Runs Slightly Hot: I would not say that this receiver gets very hot, but I could see an issue if this were in an enclosed cabinet. At that point you might want to think about getting a small fan to keep the unit cool. I notice it runs a bit hotter than my older receiver. Not a deal breaker, but worth mentioning.

=====================
CONS
=====================
- XBOX 360 Compatibility: I should mention this because I became frustrated when hooking up my XBOX 360 and could not get the video to come through to the TV. I have the video output from the receiver to the TV set to use HDMI. However, my XBOX 360 is one of the earlier models without HDMI, so I have to hook it up to the receiver using a component cable, which is still HD, but just analog. I ended up realizing that with a 1080p video resolution selected for the XBOX 360 no video would get transferred to my TV. Something with the upscaling from the analog 1080p to the digital 1080p gets lost and I got no video on my TV. If I set my XBOX 360 to 720p the video would come through fine. I ended up just splitting the video directly to my TV and having only the audio go through the receiver, since I wanted 1080p. It's not a huge deal now, but at the time it was frustrating and it's worth noting for any XBOX 360 owners without an HDMI output.
- No Power Adapter Inputs: My older receiver offered two AC power inputs, which was nice when hooking up your various components. I was disappointed to not see that offered on this receiver, but I'm really picking at straws now.

Overall this is still my best pick without going over $1,000 for an HD receiver with multi-zone support, HDMI Inputs/Outputs, a ton of input options, great quality, tons of tweaking options and a few minor issues.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Where To Buy Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

Well I am Poor! Saved for one year to buy this TX-SR806B and the speakers. I paired it with polk monitor 70's front left and right. For the center I am using the recommended Center Polk Cs1 it is huge. However wish I got the cs2 Bigger. For the line up I got the best sub for the monitor set up the PSW10 powered subwoofer. It Is great At low level. on the dial about half will bass stuff off the walls so no need to crank it up full blast it starts cuffing..raddled who wants to blow such an expensive sub take no chances. (not turned all the way up starts to raddled but you really don't need it all the way up.) It sounds great! then I got the polk monitor 60's for the back left right and I used the Polk Audio TSi200 Bookshelf Speakers I robbed from the living room till I can purchase the monitor 50's Well I hope this helps so that's what I was running the TX-SR806B Everything was fine for two months to the day I must give a little more info about the receiver. It runs hot burning hot so I got a mini fan took the entire back off the component /TV stand to help cool it and ran the A/C At 70 degrees while I was jamming out. And the 9000 BTU window unit could not keep the room cooler them 74 while it was on! HOT! Now this was my dream radio sounds great you could wake the entire block if you wanted to I really loved it could not be live the sound I had been missing for all the years. I had been using Sony and other brands the receiver has a 2 year warranty now that's great! Ok back to the point. While using at half volume system shut off had the monster power serge and fan on it so the receiver shuts off and I figure it went into protect mode well (manual time.) Unhook every speaker wire! And wait an hr. Turn it on then turn volume to max then down again and it resets well I did it for 5 times 5 hrs. Hoping it would just turn back on nope so I call and they say it cannot be fixed by me pushing and resetting the unit. So I have to take it to ups and have it packed there way pay for $1000 ins. Just if they loose it not if it is damaged while shipping because it is broken right now. Well I live in Florida and the closest repair shop is in NY. Wow this receiver weight is around 56 lbs. So $82 to send it to the nearest repair shop. I have called and the repair shop tells me transformer defective! Power supply factory defective part! Because it was Less then two months old! So beware I am going to try to get them to pay me back the Shipping and handling, I had to pay. I will let you know what becomes of it so far no receiver for 4 weeks now Did I mention unit gets very hot and will burn you at half volume after five min. Of use.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

I bought this unit in February of 2009. One day it just quit working. I called ONkyo and they directed me to their authorized warranty repair center. That was 2 months ago. The warranty center, which is awsome, told me that Onkyo said that the parts are on back order and that I may have to wait another 1-2 months. The warranty center evaluated and called the second day I dropped it off so it wasn't their issue it is ONkyo's. If you feel like rolling the dice go ahead and buy this unit. Maybe you will get one that doesn't need any work done on it. Maybe you won't. I will never buy anything Onkyo again. But if you have money to burn go for it.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

I have had this rcvr for 4 months and love it. Unfortunately, a spike caused it to short all the outputs (even hooked up to a surge protector). Before that incident, it performed flawlessly and true. I have/had it hooked to a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 7.3's,Cerwin Vega AT-12's,a Vega sub, and an Onkyo sub for pure enjoyment at unbelievable levels of clarity and SPL. As the price is dropping tremendously, this is not something to pass up. If you have been doing research, STOP. Buy this. Also, check out the Onkyo site--It has some great deals too. I bought a refurbed DVD player to play CD's and it was dirt cheap; also looks brand new.

Buy Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

I had a SR804, the predecessor to this product, but it met an untimely death due to owner clumsiness. I was sick about it, but found the SR806 looked like an upgraded product. Wow was it ever. Much easier to set up, easier to navigate, and a far superior audio and video quality. The auto speaker set-up was bang on target, where with the 804 I had to make many adjustments. Great 7.1 separation and reproduction. I don't know how any other receiver could be better. Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

I added this receiver to my home system at the same time that I added the LG BD390 Blu-Ray Player. The combined result was an absolute WOW! It also passed the wife test for you married men out there.

The hookup was similar to other Onkyo hookups. In this case I used the HDMI inputs for my Directv DVR, my HD-DVD player and the new Blu-Ray player. The 806 then outputs HDMI video to the display and automatically processes and provides the best audio option depending on the source material. This is most apparent when watching shows thru the Directv DVR where shows will be Dolby Digital, All Channel Stereo, PLII Movie and others depending on what the source signal is providing.

One of the absolute best features is the Audessy MultEQ speaker system setup. Once the speakers are wired to the unit you plug into the front panel a special microphone that you place in your listening area. IT IS BEST TO DO THIS ALL SIX TIMES THAT THE UNIT WILL ALLOW. Place the microphone at the first listening spot at ear level (a photo tripod is great for this and the microphone has an appropriate hole in its base for a tripod) and, after turning off anything that makes sound including an air conditioner, let the unit make it's sound checks. It will check each speaker in turn, note how many speakers are in the system and whether a subwoofer is attached, measure the capability of the speaker, make the proper internal adjustments and also measure the distance from each speaker to the listening position. The first test takes longest and the follow on measurements are faster because the unit already knows the basic hookup of the speaker system. The display, both on the unit and displayed on the TV screen, will tell you when to move the microphone to listening position number two. As I said, it is highly recommended that you do this all six times even if you only have two or three prime listening spots. You can do them again in the same area as the primary spots to further focus in the sound. The result of all of this is focused sound to your viewing position that makes the most of your speakers and accommodates as best as possible for your listening environment.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Cheap Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

The Onkyo TX-SR806S is an upgrade from a 5 year old Panasonic SA-HE200. HDMI connectivity was the number one priority for me. And it is silver - matches some of the equipment in my rack. I was also very happy to pay under $600 for this item! I am running all audio through the 806, and all video with the exception of the PC. I have a very difficult room - hardwood floors, with pocket doors behind me and on the left side of the living room. The speaker calibration worked wonders in smoothing out the sound in the room. I am hearing more from my speakers now - it's very subtle and the improvement is noticeable.

Connected devices:
JBL E20's - Front
JBL EC25 - Center
Velodyne DPS-12 - Sub
JBL E10's - Surrounds
Paradigm Atoms - Surround Backs
Toshiba HD XA2 HD DVD
Sony DHG-HDD 250 HD DVR

Sony VCR
Terk HDTV I antenna
Home Theater PC with LG combo Blu-Ray/HD DVD Drive
Technics SL 1500 Mk2 Turntable
Mitsubishi WD-Y65 65" DLP RPTV

Pros:
Build quality - it's built like a tank
Ability to assign inputs and rename them, extremely flexible.
5 HDMI inputs
Ease of speaker calibration with Audyssey MultEQ
Decoding of Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio
Audio quality - The sound is very clear, detailed and clean - even at low listening levels thanks to THX Loudness Plus
Phono Input - vinyl sounds fantastic through the Onkyo.
FM Tuner - Very sensitive, picks up weaker stations much better than my previous receiver

Cons:
It is big. Sticks out of the back of my a/v rack.
No switched outlet on the rear of the receiver.
TV has to be on to listen to a cd in the HD DVD player. HDMI authentication issue. I use the Sony DVD player instead.
Runs a little warm, but not too hot. Placed a modified pc case fan on top of the hottest part of the case. Also placed some Audio-Technica audio insulators (AT 605) under the feet of the 806 to allow air to pass through. Temps dropped from 56C to 41C. Cool to the touch now.
HDMI switching lag - some delay when changing inputs. Audio lag of about 5 seconds when in FF, Skip, RW modes with the DVR.
Occasional clicking when changing audio formats - drives my dog nuts.
Although you probably won't use it, the volume knob feels really cheap.
No backlit remote. Not a deal breaker. Using a Harmony 880 remote.

Overall, I am quite pleased with the performance of the Onkyo TX-SR806.
